Plant Breeding - Technician I

Summary

To assist the Breeding Team primarily in product evaluation and all other aspects of field, lab and greenhouse experimentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to work independently and supervise effectively seasonal labor to assure that all operational procedures are followed along with a high degree of work precision
  • To assist and execute in office/shed evaluations and keep records for daily evaluation activities accurately
  • Ability to drive a pickup with attached trailer (training available) when trials are ready
  • Ability to hook up the trailer and unhook it in a safe and timely matter.
  • Working environments include field, greenhouse, and Be able to work shifts under exposure to sun, cold, heat, etc.
  • Learn and assist in laboratory and breeding activities when not evaluating trials.

Qualifications

  • Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office Software like Excel, Outlook and MS Word (training available).
  • Possess and continually maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license in order to be able to safely drive company vehicles and travel to remote company sites in the U.S. (often with other workers).
  • Ability to execute various plant related field, greenhouse or seed work in warm or cold weather and capable of lifting 35-40 lbs. on occasion as part of plant production and evaluation duties.
  • Good eyesight and hand coordination
  • Ability to accurately read, generate and modify long lists of numbers or other written records containing many numbers or written notations with accuracy and proper checking which are common to research activities.
  • Capable of understanding and accurately responding to emails or texts written in English.
  • Must be a non-tobacco user in any form or at any time.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated and detail focused.
  • Strong proactive problem-solving Safety-minded.
  • Able to work effectively in a team and multicultural setting. Able to oversee and direct seasonal labor and co-workers as directed.
  • Able to safely travel (via driving or airline) for up to 14 consecutive days to work at remote locations assisting in experimental evaluations.
  • Able to freely and safely walk, kneel, bend, grasp, pull, lift and climb in various uneven terrains, conditions and facilities such as are common to farm, greenhouse, nursery, packing and lab settings.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus, strong problem solving and multitasking skills are also advantageous.
